Brick Wall Backstop Completed

Today we completed the brick portion of the backstop wall. Several bricklayers and laborers worked two long days laying 13 courses of hard red brick. Brick so strong that it will turn away the fastest of fast balls. The length of the brick wall backstop measures 210 feet going from the 1st to the 3rd base dugout.

Now we wait on the limestone caps to top off the brick wall. Then the netting gets installed rising forty approximately 40 feet into the air.

After the fall league ends we will be taking out the existing fencing, knocking down the current score booth and extending the field behind home plate. Batting averages will drop as more foul balls will be outs.

Thanks to Tom Cordogan and all the bricklayers and laborers that built the wall.

Concrete Poured

Once the netting poles were stabilized a trench was dug connecting the poles. The trench is approximately 42 inches deep and 2.5 feet wide. The trench is being filled with concrete to serve as a base for the brick backstop.

The brick work should be starting this weekend.

Once the brick work is complete then the netting will be put into place.

Things are moving along and the weather has been cooperating. We should finish the concrete today.

Backstop Poles Installed

Today six 50 foot poles were set behind the existing backstop fencing. The poles were set into 10 foot holes, aligned and then cement was poured to secure their positions. This is the first step in the backstop project but already it looks great.

Not sure how long the current backstop fence has been in place but seems like more than 20 years. The fence backstop is just too short and we have way too many foul balls leave the playing field into the parking lot. Over the last couple of years we have had about 11 windows shattered.

The next step is to dig the footing for the above ground brick wall. The netting from the top of the poles will attach to the brick wall.

Lots to do yet but things are really starting off fantastically.

Backstop Netting Project

This week we begin work on adding a new backstop. This will be a huge project and will add to the luster of our facility. We will be installing a brick wall backstop incorporating six 50 foot poles into the wall. Attached to the wall will be a 40 foot high net. This netting will stretch from the third base dugout to the first base dugout.

We will be setting this wall about 50 feet behind home plate allowing us to open up the field in the foul area along first, third and behind home plate. The netting will not only better protect cars and spectators but will provide a much better view of the game for the fans.

This should be an outstanding addition to Trout Park Baseball for next season.
